Explosion Proof AC Servo Motor
Explosion Proof AC Servo Motors are engineered to operate safely in environments where flammable gases, mists or vapors can exist in explosive concentrations. They are encased in robust housings made from non-sparking materials with tight seals to prevent hazardous materials from entering or exiting the motor.
Typically, these motors are listed for use in Class 1, Division 2 environments and must be equipped with a secondary nameplate displaying the Division/Class/Group rating and the designated T-code.
ATEX & IECEx Approved
The explosion-proof design makes this motor perfect for use in a variety of hazardous environments where flammable gases, vapors, or dusts may be present. The Goldline EB family of motors meets strict ATEX/IECEx standards and is rated for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D gas environments or Class II, Division 1 & 2, Groups F and G dust environments.
The motor enclosure is specially designed to withstand and contain an internal explosion without causing ignition, even in the event of arcing or extreme temperatures. In addition, the surface temperature of the motor is limited Explosion Proof AC Servo Motor to a predetermined value (T-code) that must not be higher than what is required for the specific environment.
Unlike conventional electric motors, servo motors are powered by frequency rather than voltage. This makes them less susceptible to power surges than DC motors. They also offer a more consistent performance over a wide range of operating conditions. This, combined with the ruggedized components, high reliability resolvers, sealed life-time lubricated bearings, and reduced runout machining tolerances, make these servo motors ideal for use in hazardous environments.
Versatile Design
The global explosion-proof motor market is projected to thrive over the forecast period, reaching a valuation of US$ 5,540.8 million by 2034. Growing industrialization, along with stringent safety regulations necessitating the use of specialized equipment, drives demand. Incorporation of advanced technologies, such as IoT integration and Industry 4.0, further enhances growth prospects.
Explosion-proof motors are critical for industries navigating volatile environments. Oil & gas exploration, chemical production, and mining are some of the sectors where explosive atmospheres may exist. Using innovative motors to handle these conditions ensures operational continuity, while adhering to strict safety guidelines.
Moog’s explosion-proof motors feature a range of ruggedized components, designed to perform well in harsh thermal and shock loads. They also comply with CE (VDE) standards and have been subjected to rigorous testing. With sealed life-time lubricated bearings, reduced runout machining tolerances, and an IP 65/67 design, they can deliver years of low-maintenance operation and boost overall system availability.
Additionally, these motors are compatible with various drive scenarios. This flexibility allows them to be easily integrated into existing machinery. This is particularly useful for original equipment manufacturers, as it helps reduce the time to market. The explosion-proof motors are available in 70-155 mm frame sizes and have an internal IP protection rating of IP65/67. They are designed to accommodate foot-mounted and flange-mounted encoder systems, as well as with both solid or hollow shafts.
Robust Construction
Explosion-proof servo motors are constructed with robust materials that can withstand internal explosions without damaging the enclosure or allowing ignition to reach external atmospheres. This makes them a great choice for 48v hub motor applications where flammable gases, mists, or vapors may exist in potentially hazardous concentrations.
For example, in mining environments with explosive gas and dust conditions, explosion-proof servo motors help power equipment like drilling rigs and pumps that are essential for extraction and safety. Similarly, in oil and gas exploration sites, these motors operate critical machinery like chemical processing plants that handle volatile substances.
Alternatively, hygienic environments like food processing require frequent washdowns that can cause metal surfaces to degrade over time. Radiation environments often present unique challenges as well, requiring motor materials that are tolerant of total integrated dose levels to avoid degradation over long periods of time.
Kollmorgen is proud to offer a selection of ATEX and IECEx approved motors for all your hazardous environments needs. The Goldline EB and EBH series of explosion-proof motors are ideal for a variety of industries with hazardous environments including mining, oil and gas, industrial paint booths, and textile mills. Each frame size meets ATEX Equipment Group II and IECEx Equipment Protection Levels b or c to ensure that these motors are compliant with European (CE) and North American (UL/cUL) standards.
Customization
In environments where flammable gases, dust, vapors, or fibers are present, electrical equipment must be designed to prevent the possibility of igniting such materials. This is accomplished by ensuring that the surface temperature of the motor or motor enclosure does not rise above a certain limit, and by eliminating any potential ignition sources like arcing or high temperatures. Explosion proof servo motors are encased in sturdy and tightly sealed housings that can tolerate internal explosions and contain them within, keeping hazardous materials from spreading to the surrounding environment.
These servo motors are built to maintain consistent performance in challenging environments, even under extreme heat or moisture. They are equipped with thermal protection mechanisms, such as temperature sensors and built-in cooling systems that prevent overheating. They are also encased in durable and corrosion-resistant housings that are able to withstand harsh industrial conditions.
Explosion proof servo motors are essential for a variety of industries, including oil and gas on offshore platforms and refineries, chemical processing facilities handling volatile substances, and food and beverage companies dealing with flammable dust and gases. In addition to providing exceptional motion control capabilities, these motors are ideally suited for use in hazardous environments because they meet rigorous testing and certification standards imposed by UL (United States), ATEX (Europe), or CCC (China). They also feature a variety of options to help customers customize their product to suit specific application needs.
